Why Us?
At Howder Freezer Beef and Lamb, we are a family-owned farm committed to providing our customers with the best quality food possible, while keeping our business as local as possible. This originally started when we decided we wanted to take control of our own food source, ensuring that the foods we eat are as healthy as possible, and to cut out the larger companies that often focus entirely on profit at the expense of the livestock they raise and the final product they deliver. All of the meat we sell is antibiotic-free, non-GMO, and without any added growth hormones. While our livestock is not 100% grass-fed, our animals are rotationally grazed and have access to open pastures and grass their entire lives. We believe this, combined with a supplemental grain diet, is the best blend of quality both of the life of the animal and the meat we can produce. We take pride in our farm-to-table approach, and want to do our part to keep our food chain local.
Beef
Our beef are primarily Black Angus. Angus produces a very robust and flavorful beef with fine marbling and a tender texture that most of us will associate with a quality steak.

We might also, at times, have beef that is Black Angus crossed either with Hereford or Holstein, which is known to produce a more tender texture with better marbling, but with a more mild overall flavor. Any of our meat that is not 100% Black Angus will be clearly listed as such when sold.
Lamb
Our lamb and mutton is primarily a Katahdin and Dorper cross. The Katahdins are known for their mild flavor and tender texture, as well as their overall health and mothering abilities. The Dorpers are known for their excellent conformation and carcass size, as well as their fine marbling. The resulting cross of these two breeds is a lamb that grows well without hormone or high grain inputs, has very few medical needs, which means we can raise them without needing antibiotics and other medical intervention, and ultimately meat that has a very mild flavor and the tender silky texture quality lamb is known for.

For those that desire the more robust taste and texture, feel free to reach out, we often have hogget and mutton available that can go to processing whenever our next scheduled date is!
